I made coconut cranberry chocolate chunk cookies again for a potluck on Friday. And one of the friends I went with also made cookies, from a Fannie Farmer recipe close to the Tollhouse recipe. They really looked like cookies, with the little fissures on top, smooth edges, the light brown color of semisweet chips. My cookies looked at best weird, at worst pretentious, next to them. It is odd because I think of my recipe as very similar to the traditional recipe, just with half the sugar, some oats or coconut for texture, darker chocolate because I don’t like semisweet, chunks instead of chips, nuts, fruit, spices, etc… I realize that I’m deluding myself, that the cookies I make are different, that I’ve gone off the deep end. At the potluck there were also cookie-like vegan things (people were asking what these were, at least mine are identifiable as cookies) and madeleines dipped in chocolate (full disclosure: I had none of my cookies and five of these, delicious!). Do people really want “interesting” cookies? Am I straying to far from the butter, sugar and chocolate of my roots? Luckily, all of my friend’s cookies and mine were eaten, so for now, I can rest easy.
